ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Monday afternoon death of a 6-month-old boy found unresponsive in his unincorporated St. Petersburg home.

According to the agency, deputies were called to a home in the 3500 block of 51st Avenue North around 12:28 p.m. June 5. Antonio was home alone with five other children at the time while the baby’s mother, Nina Yates, 29, was away, an email from the sheriff’s office said.

Around 12:20 p.m., Antonio Ford sent one of the older children to check on the baby, deputies said. Anthony was found “on the side of the bed with his head stuck in the opening between the mattress and headboard,” the email added.

Antonio Ford performed CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive. Anthony was taken to a local hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

“Detectives say the infant had a crib at the residence but he was often allowed to sleep in his parents’ bed,” the email said.

The child’s death remains under investigation. No further information is being released at this time.
