All-Female Broadcast Team At Tropicana, 1st In MLB History

When the Rays play the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday, one of the featured broadcasters hopes the memorable night will inspire young women.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — History in Major League Baseball broadcasting will be made Tuesday at the Tropicana Field with an all-female broadcast team during the Tampa Bay Rays against Baltimore Orioles game, Front Office Sports tweeted.

The broadcasting team will include Lauren Gardner and Heidi Watney of MLB Network as anchors; Sarah Langs, a reporter for mlb.com, will serve as a booth analyst; Alanna Rizzo of MLB Network, will work as an on-field analyst; and Melanie Newman, a broadcaster for the the Orioles, will be responsible for play-by-play calls.

Tricia Whitaker, a Rays in-game reporter, had to decline her invite to be part of history because of Bally Sports Sun rules, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“I’m looking forward to working with these talented and amazing women on this broadcast,” Watney said in a news release. “Baseball is for everyone, and my hope is that this broadcast helps show young women that they too can be a part of this great game in any way they want.”

MLB and YouTube will show the game.
