Explosion Injures Worker At Pinellas Waste Disposal Site: Reports

The explosion happened after an employee who was unloading his truck picked up the can from the ground and opened it, reports say.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — An ammo can exploded early Tuesday at the Pinellas County Solid Waste Disposal Complex, injuring a man, media reports say.

The explosion happened around 8:45 a.m. at 114th Avenue North after an employee who was unloading his truck picked up the can from the ground and opened it after showing a coworker, WTVT reported, citing the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The incident, captured on video and shared by WTSP, bruised a Junk Punks Removal Service staff member in the stomach, the news outlet reported.

"Obviously, incredibly scary," Junk Punks owner Logan Sullivan told WTSP. "But, obviously, unfortunate situation. We've never had an event like this happen."

Bomb-detection dogs with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office cleared the scene, media outlets reported.
