Bowie Birthday: 'Ziggy Stardust' Is 65!

Friday night, the State Theatre in downtown St. Petersburg hosted a 65th birthday tribute to the legendary rocker.

ST. PETERSBURG – "Ground Control to Major Tom: Take your protein pills, and put your helment on." Because legendary bad boy British rocker David Bowie turns 65 Sunday.

The singer known for his outlandish fashion sense and theatrical rock music had a birthday party of sorts in downtown St. Petersburg Friday night at the State Theatre.

Though 'Ziggy Stardust' himself was not present, a slew of musicians channeled their rocker muse to put on a show for Bowie fans. Although audiences would have been thrilled if "The Man Who Fell to Earth" dropped by the 'burg, it just was not in the dance card.

Instead folks showed up as Bowie – dressing, talking, mugging and singing like him. Music started pumping at 7 and went past midnight. It was a chill vibe at State, and Bowie fans could not wait to pay tribute to one of their favorite stars. Bowie's music spans nearly a half-century and includes such hits "Changes," "Heroes," "Ziggy Stardust," and "Space Oddity."

Each band played between three to six songs made famous by Bowie. "Changes" was a popular selection as well as "Heroes." Some of the artists even sported Bowie staples, like heavy makeup and scarves.

Tickets were $12 in advance and $15 at the door. The night was a spectacle for music lovers, and it's safe to say that Bowie would have been proud.
