ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 26-year-old man is dead following a Saturday night crash on Gandy Boulevard, east of Interstate 275.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Maurice La’Trail Wheeler was heading westbound on Gandy around 10:40 p.m. April 22 at “a high rate of speed.” As Wheeler’s 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo neared the I-275 overpass, police say he encountered slower traffic.

“Wheeler swerved to the right and lost control of his vehicle,” an email from the police department said. The Monte Carlo left the road and hit a guardrail. Wheeler, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car, police said.
