New poll results shows which mayoral candidate St. Pete residents favor the most.

A recent poll points to who residents think is the right person to lead St. Pete after Mayor Rick Kriseman's term ends.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The poll results are in for who would get the most votes in the upcoming primary mayoral election in St. Petersburg. Mayor Rick Kriseman will be leaving office in November since he will have reached his term limit.

About 97 percent of the 749 survey takers, who are St. Pete registered voters, said they plan to vote in the election Tuesday according to a St.PetePolls.org survey.

In the same survey conducted Aug. 5, mayoral candidate Ken Welch ranked first in the poll at 30.9 percent; followed by Robert Blackmon, 25.2 percent; Darden Rice, 16.4 percent; Wengay Newton, 10.3 percent; Pete Boland, 4.2 percent; Marcile Powers, 1.4 percent; Torry Nelson, 0.8 percent and Michael Ingram 0.7 percent.

The survey narrowed the number of candidates in some of its poll questions:

  • Ken Welch: 43 percent
  • Robert Blackmon: 28 percent
  • Unsure: 28 percent

If the election for Mayor of St. Petersburg were held today and the candidates were Darden Rice and Ken Welch, candidates were Darden Rice and Ken Welch, who would you vote for?

  • Darden Rice: 25 percent
  • Ken Welch: 47.4 percent
  • Unsure: 27.4 percent

History will be made in St. Petersburg if Rice or Welch is elected, which would make Rice the first openly gay mayor in the city, and Welch the first Black mayor of the city.

  • Darden Rice: 38.9 percent
  • Robert Blackmon: 29.6 percent
  • Unsure: 31.6 percent

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. If you requested a mail-in ballot, you can drop off your ballot at any supervisor elections' office until Aug. 24.
