Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For St. Pete: National Weather

Doppler radar is tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near MacDill Air Force Base to near downtown St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — St. Petersburg is under a severe thunderstorm warning as of Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay Area.

At 3:24 p.m., Doppler radar tracked severe thunderstorms along a line extending from MacDill Air Force Base to near downtown St. Pete, moving northwest at 20 mph. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms, the National Weather Service said. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm.

Pea size hail and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with these storms. This weather advisory continues until 4:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
