Shorecrest Strives to Raise $60,000 Overnight
Friday will mark the start of an overnight Relay For Life event at Shorecrest. The school hopes to reach its fundraising goal of $60,000.
Friday, will once again host its annual Relay For Life event. The school has raised more than $500,000 in the last five years combined for the American Cancer Society.
Organizers and participants hope to hit the goal of $60,000 this year. Proceeds will once again benefit the American Cancer Society.
There are 34 teams participating in the event. Relay For Life teams are composed of faculty, staff, students and parents from Shorecrest as well as neighbors, friends and even a team from the .

The festivities start at 9 a.m. Friday morning with an assembly held for students, faculty and staff before an introductory lap is completed. Throughout the day on Friday, the physical education classes will walk the track in conjunction with the fundraiser.
Friday night will jumpstart the public events. At 6 p.m. an Opening Ceremony will take place as well as a Survivor Celebration. The Survivor Celebration will include a lap dedicated to survivors and caregivers. At 9 p.m. on Friday night, a Luminaria Ceremony will be held to honor those lost to cancer as well as give hope to those currently battling the illness. All of the events are open to the public.

After the presentation of ceremonies, the fundraiser will continue until sunrise on Saturday morning. Overnight stays are exclusive to the Relay for Life participants. According to a news release from Shorecrest, the event holds a special place in the heart of the school:
“Our school has a commitment to support the work of the American Cancer Society in funding research to find a cure, in educating the public about cancer prevention and in supporting patients and caregivers.”
