ATHENS, GA — Former NASCAR driver John Wes Townley was killed in a shooting near Athens, Ga. Saturday night. A 30-year-old woman was also wounded in the shooting, according to the the Athens Banner-Herald..

The shooting occurred just after 9 p.m., and Athens-Clarke County Police Lt. Shaun Barnett said the shooting appears to be domestic in nature, as the shooter knew the victims.

Townley, 31, spent eight years on the NASCAR circuit, competing in multiple NASCAR national touring series, most notably winning a Camping World Truck Series race in Las Vegas in 2015. Townley drove a car owned by his father, who was a co-founder of the vehicle's primary sponsor, the Zaxby’s restaurant chain.

No arrests have been made in the shooting.
