GA Homeowner Mariah Carey Sued Over ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ Song

Mariah Carey, who purchased a home in Metro Atlanta, was sued Friday over her "All I Want for Christmas Is You" song.

GEORGIA — Grammy-Award winning singer Mariah Carey, who reportedly purchased a home in metro Atlanta, was sued on over the weekend over her 1994 Christmas classic, "All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

Carey is being sued by songwriter Andy Stone who said he co-wrote a song with the same title five years earlier, according to the court filing. Stone, known artistically as Vince Vance and the Valiants, filed a complaint in New Orleans federal court on Friday. He is demanding no less than $60 million in damages for alleged copyright infringement, unjust enrichment, and violations of the Lanham Act.

The court filing describes Stone as a self-employed artist who earns his livelihood in the business of performing, selling and licensing his copyrighted music.

In the suit, Stone claims his version of the song received "extensive airplay" during the 1993 Christmas season and even began making appearances on the Billboard music charts.

Carey is named in the suit along with her co-writer Walter Afanasieff and the music company, Sony.

The court documents say Vance’s lawyers initially made contact with Carey and others in April 2021 and followed up with a letter in December. “Even after communicating the concerns with Defendants, Plaintiff was unable to come to any agreement over usage of the ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’,” the suit said.
