1 Dead, 1 Charged With Murder In Fatal Athens Shooting

The shooting, which killed a Winterville resident, happened Monday at Athens Road, police say.

ATHENS, GA — One man is dead, and another is in police custody, after a fatal shooting Monday morning in the 1200 block of Athens Road, police say.

Officers responded around 9 a.m. to the shooting, where they found 48-year-old Winterville resident Willie Antonio Jewell dead with a gunshot wound, Athens-Clarke County Police said.

A motive in the fatal shooting was not released, and police did not say what led to the shooting.

However, police said officers arrested Cedric Robbie Jones, 26, of Athens, at the scene.

Clarke County Jail records show Jones is in police custody and is being charged on suspicion of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm/knife during the commission of/attempt to commit certain felonies. He was granted a $10,000 bond for the latter charge but was not given a bond for the former, jail records show.
