Newborn Killed In Athens Crash That Injured Mom: Police

The baby was delivered after the crash and was placed in intensive care before later dying, police said.

ATHENS — A pregnant Canon woman suffered serious injuries in a Danielsville Road crash that ultimately killed her newborn baby, Athens-Clarke County Police said Tuesday.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. Thursday at Danielsville near Mission Drive. An Amazon delivery vehicle was heading southbound and turned into the path of a 1996 Ford Ranger, police said.

Both the 24-year-old Amazon driver and the 46-year-old Ford driver had minor injuries, police said.

The passenger of the Ford, a 41-year-old Canon woman who was pregnant, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said. Her baby was then delivered, and the woman and baby were admitted into the intensive care unit, police said.

The newborn died Saturday, prompting a homicide by vehicle probe, police said.

This is the first vehicle fatality in Athens-Clarke County this year.
