"It is with both relief and belief that I share Liza’s passing at around 2:20 last night," her mother, Laura Burke, wrote on the GoFundMe page established in her daughter's honor. "Liza has now been reunited with her sister (Edie) and they are making up for lost time."

Burke said celebrations of Liza Burke's life are still being planned. One will take place in Athens and the other at a later date in her hometown of Asheville.

"The family and friends of Liza are so grateful for your outpouring of love, prayers and generosity as we traveled this tragic journey, " she said. "Liza was loved by many and will be sorely missed."

The GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $173,000.

Laura Burke said some of that money will go to a fund at the Foundation of the Carolinas that the family is establishing in her daughters' names.

Other funds will also be used to create an endowment at the University of Georgia and to further the education of Liza Burke's students in San Pancho, Mexico.
