The Silver Comet Trail is Atlanta's not-so-hidden gem. The trail is perfect for walking because it is paved, nonmotorized and allows dogs. Plus, it's free! Fun fact: The trail runs from the Mavell Road Trailhead in Smyrna all the way to the Alabama state line, where it connects to the Chief Ladiga Trail. That's around 94.5 miles total of trail!

Sope Creek Trail gives you bang for your buck. The trail is short and sweet at 1 mile (round trip) and passes the ruins of a Civil War-era paper mill runs along the banks of the creek. This one is especially kid-friendly.

If you want a chance at saying "hi" to the local wildlife, then the Cascade Springs Nature Preserve is a great choice. Be on the lookout for turtles and deer. The trail may lead you to hidden waterfalls, a grotto, historic ruins or an amphitheater, as well as plenty of green forest. Not bad for 1.9 miles of trails.

Gorgeous views are straight ahead on the Chattahoochee River’s Palisades section, which is known for being a scenic and visually striking area. The East Palisades Trail has more than stunning views of the river: It also winds through a bamboo forest, where 30-foot-tall stalks reportedly turn musical in the wind.
