5 Sickened After Wood Found In Jimmy Dean, State Fair Food Products
A Hillshire Brands Company probe found wood might have tainted corn dog and sausage on a stick products, prompting a nationwide recall.

Hillshire Brands Company on Saturday recalled about 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage on a stick products because they may contain pieces of wood, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Texas-based company said products, such as those sold under the State Fair and Jimmy Dean brands, may be contaminated with "extraneous material." Particularly, the batter could have wood pieces embedded in them, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service said.
Five people have been sickened so far by the products, the FSIS said. It is unknown in which states the people were sickened.

After receiving customer complaints, the FSIS said Hillshire investigated and "determined that the wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering."
The affected products were shipped nationwide to retailers, food service locations, Department of Defense facilities and school districts not a part of the USDA for the National School Lunch Program. The FSIS said they were also sold online.

The products were packaged between March 17 and Friday and have the establishment number “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on the packaging, the FSIS said.
The federal agency released a six-page complete list of the recalled products, which consists of the products' package sizes and types and use by or sell by dates.
A 27-page file showing the food labels for these products was also released.
Among the products were Jimmy Dean cinnamon french toast sausage on a stick, Jimmy Dean pancake and turkey on stick and State Fair beef hot dogs wrapped in a honey sweetened batter.
The FSIS said some of the recalled products could be in the refrigerators and freezers of customers and schools. Anyone concerned about an injury should contact a healthcare provider, the FSIS said.
"Consumers, schools and institutions who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase," the FSIS said.
Anyone with questions about the recall can call Christina Self, The Hillshire Brands Company associate director of customer care, at (888) 747-7611, the FSIS said.
