Storms Expected In GA, Followed By Extreme Warm-Up: See Forecast

Weather forecasters say Georgia could have its first 90-degree day of the year by Friday among a seesaw of temperatures and thunderstorms.

ATLANTA, GA — After thunderstorms pass through some Georgia counties Wednesday, weather forecasters warned summer-like temperatures could be expected by Friday.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday predicted a 30 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Wednesday in metro Atlanta. In Savannah, storms are anticipated between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Weather officials did not say if the storms are expected to be severe, but they noted that winds of 10-15 mph and gusts of 25 mph may complement what could transition into mostly cloudy weather. Mid-morning Wednesday could come with patchy fog, the NWS reported.

But the cool temperatures will be short-lived as the NWS predicts metro Atlanta to skyrocket to a high temperature of 83 degrees and a low temperature of 67 degrees on Wednesday.

Steadily increasing, the seesaw temperatures are expected to soar to 90 degrees by Friday before plummeting early next week, according to the NWS forecast.

This comes after Georgia had a bout with severe storms on Monday, when an EF-1 tornado landed in Henry County, the NWS reported. The estimated 90-mph twister, more than 6 miles wide, touched ground between 1 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. near Interstate 75 and Jodeco Road, according to a NWS graphic.

An EF-0 tornado with 75-mph winds spun on the ground in Coweta County, spanning nearly 5 miles, around 12:30 p.m. Monday, the NWS reported. Its path traveled along Lower Fayetteville Road, not far from I-85, a NWS graphic showed.

There were no injuries or deaths with either storm, according to the weather service.
