Alex Wan wins re-election to Atlanta City Council District 6 seat

Longtime Morningside homeowner's three-term track record affirmed by voters, will continue representing intown neighborhoods

Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan was victorious in his bid to continue representing District 6. Unopposed in this election cycle, Wan garnered 8,610 votes.

“I am humbled and honored to have earned re-election to the Atlanta City Council District 6 seat,” Wan says. “I am deeply grateful that my friends and neighbors – including some who are new to this district due to redistricting – have affirmed my track record as well as our collective vision for Atlanta’s future.”

District 6 includes the intown neighborhoods of Ansley Park, Brookwood Hills, the Emory University corridor, Garden Hills, Lindridge/Martin Manor, Lindbergh/Morosgo, Midtown, Morningside/Lenox Park, Peachtree Heights East, Piedmont Heights, Peachtree Hills, Sherwood Forest and Virginia-Highland.

“I look forward to working alongside my colleagues on City Council – returning and new – over the next four years, and I remain committed to being your voice, championing our issues, contributing my perspective, and pushing our city government to deliver on those priorities,” says Wan, who was raised in Atlanta and has been a District 6 and Morningside homeowner for 31 years.

He was endorsed in the race by the Atlanta Professional Fire Fighters Union and the Victory Fund, and received an “A” rating – and the highest candidate score – from the Committee for a Better Atlanta.

Wan was first elected to the City Council District 6 post in 2009 and easily earned a second term in 2013. After a brief hiatus, he was re-elected to his third term in 2021, serving his current term which runs through early 2026. He is the first Asian American and first openly gay man to serve on Atlanta City Council.

For the past two years Wan has been the Assistant Vice President of Community Affairs at Emory University. His professional experience includes the private, public, non-profit and higher-education sectors. Prior to his 2021 run to return to office, Wan was appointed by the Fulton County Commission to the role of Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections; he resigned that role (in accordance with the county’s bylaws) to run for office.

“Voters know my values, my commitment to service and the hands-on, coalition-building leadership I represent,” Wan says. “They know I’m accessible and that my prior experience and the relationships I have developed with state and national elected officials will continue to serve them well.”

The former small business owner holds a bachelor’s in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech, a Finance MBA from Wharton Business School, and has completed educational programs at Dartmouth and Harvard. Wan is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta, Leadership DeKalb, and the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education’s Education Policy Fellowship Program. He serves on the Boards of the Piedmont Park Conservancy and the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority (ATL), the goal of which is to better connect transit options across the 13-county Atlanta region. He previously served on the Boards of the Atlanta Regional Commission, Live Thrive Atlanta, the Summer Learning Council Greater Atlanta and the Creating Connected Communities Advisory Council.
