A bystander saw Rivera break the car's window and notified the nearby officer, the GBI said.
As the officer investigated the damage, Rivera advanced toward the officer with flat metal, the GBI said.
Rivera refused to drop the metal, and the officer shot Rivera to death, the GBI said. The officer was not injured in the shooting.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
Once the GBI's investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
