Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- One person is dead after a small plane crashed near a popular Atlanta-area hiking trail. According to Georgia authorities, the twin-engine plane went down on Oct. 31 in Rock Mill Park in Alpharetta. The plane was traveling to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport when it crashed. There were two people on the plane at the time. (Subscription: Macon Telegraph)
- On Nov. 1, the Atlanta Medical Center permanently closed its doors. The center has worked for over 100 years to provide medical services to the poor of Atlanta. Both AMC locations were reportedly losing money, prompting the closure. Local hospitals are already seeing a significant influx of new patients seeking help in response to the closure. - The Atlanta Public School System has announced that it will replace some of its diesel buses with 25 electric buses. The move is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's $5 billion Clean School Bus Program. A total of 389 school districts nationwide were selected for the first round of funding, with 15 in Georgia alone. The Atlanta Public Schools will receive a $9.9 million grant for the buses. - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has announced plans to provide high-mobility, all-terrain track wheelchairs for park visitors throughout the state. The wheelchairs will be made available at ten different parks through a partnership with the Aimee Copeland Foundation. Officials hope that these all-terrain wheelchairs will allow people to explore the parks and hit the trails, no matter their mobility. An official unveiling is planned for Nov. 4. (WSB Atlanta)
