Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- An elderly man was arrested on suspicion of murder Saturday night. According to Atlanta police, the 70-year-old man was found holding a woman hostage in a home on the 2000 block of North Avenue. The man refused to release the woman or allow anyone entry into the home, so SWAT broke down the door. They found the woman in the bathtub and she appeared to be stabbed to death; her identity is still unknown as of Monday evening. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police. - The air in Atlanta now meets federal ozone standards. There are several causes for Atlanta's lower ozone levels, which now meet the Environmental Protection Agency's standards. The dramatic decrease in commuting during the pandemic ranks as one of the foremost factors in the change in ozone levels. Besides providing a boost to the environment, reducing ozone levels can help people with asthma and lung issues, as well as improve cardiac health. (WABE 90.1 FM)
- The Atlanta Opera is planning a series of community conversations and events around the famous opera 'Madama Butterfly.' Along with partners that include the Japan American Society of Georgia, Atlanta Opera hopes to contextualize and explore the opera. This will be a fascinating and eye-opening experience for fans of history and opera alike. The events will begin on Nov. 5; to learn more, visit the link. (GlobalAtlanta)
- The Atlanta Art Festival Halloween Weekend is coming back to the city for a truly one-of-a-kind cultural experience.
