Atlanta Traffic Impacted By Rosalynn Carter Memorial

With high-profile leaders attending a memorial for the late Rosalynn Carter, closures are affecting schools and road travel Tuesday.

ATLANTA — As memorial observances continue in Georgia for the late U.S. First Lady Rosalynn Carter, traffic is being adjusted to road closures and delays Tuesday.

Carter, the wife of former President Jimmy Carter, died on Nov. 19 after suffering dementia.

Tribute services began Monday with a family motorcade at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. Three-day ceremonies will continue into Wednesday with Carter's funeral.

U.S. President Joe Biden will attend Tuesday's tribute from 1-2:30 p.m. at Glenn Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta alongside current First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

CNN reported Jimmy Carter will attend the memorial for his late wife, citing his grandson.

Other notable expected guests include former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; former first ladies Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Melania Trump; Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia First Lady Marty Kemp; Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and his daughter; Emory University President Gregory L. Fenves; former Emory presidents Claire E. Sterk, James W. Wagner and William M. Chace; and multiple members of Congress and other state officials.

Emory said North Decatur Road from Clifton Road to the Emory Village Circle, Fishburne Drive and Lane, South Kilgo Circle, Mizell Bridge and the Dowman Drive entrance to Emory's campus are closed until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Atlanta Public Schools said on X, formerly Twitter, that delays will impact buses after school, specifically in the area near the Midtown cluster and Emory.

"There will be heavy Secret Service and law-enforcement presence throughout the district that will cause traffic delays," the school system said.

Schools are being operated as normal, and parents can pick up their children early if they choose, APS said. Parents are asked to plan accordingly.

DeKalb County Schools said in a news release that Druid Hills High, Druid Hills Middle, Fernbank Elementary and Briar Vista Elementary are impacted by Carter's memorial service.

At Druid Hills High, car riders will be affected along with bus routes due to detours. Meanwhile, at several school access roads surrounding Druid Hills Middle are closed, impacted bus routes, school officials said.

Bus pickups and student drop-offs were affected at Briar Vista Elementary and Fernbank Elementary.

"We strongly encourage all families of these schools to utilize the free DCSD Transportation app for real-time updates on bus locations," school officials said.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported air travel is limited around Emory and Dobbins Air Force Base in Cobb.

A funeral procession and service are planned for late morning/early afternoon hours Wednesday in Plains.
