- Atlanta's 26th police chief was sworn in this week by Mayor Andre Dickens. Chief Darin Schierbaum was sworn in on Dec. 7 but was already serving as interim chief when Former Chief Rodney Bryant retired in June. (Reporter Newspapers + Atlanta Intown)
- The Atlanta Public Safety Commission will hold a special meeting for residents next week to suggest strategies to reduce violence involving children. The meeting will be held at Atlanta City Hall on Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting comes after the city council brainstormed ways to decrease youth crime, including imposing an 11:00 p.m. curfew for children under 16 years old. - Atlanta Housing Authority is creating a $2 million disability fund for violating the federal disability law. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 15 Atlanta housing tenants experienced disability discrimination from 2018 through 2020. Property owners and management companies failed to accommodate requests, including grab bars, assistance animals, accessible parking spots, and other Americans with Disabilities Act compliances. - An Atlanta firefighter is in the hospital after being injured while working to put out a large fire at a boarding house in northwest Atlanta. The firefighter was transported to Grady Hospital with a knee injury. Four people were in the house and were able to escape without injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown. (Atlanta Patch)
- Atlanta Eagle, a popular LGBTQ bar, has reopened following news of the mass shooting at a gay bar in Colorado last month, along with terroristic threats at local gay bars in Atlanta. Owner Richard Ramey teamed up with police and has increased security at the establishment so customers feel safe. (WSB Atlanta)
