ATLANTA — Six people were shot and one person was stabbed on Sunday in Atlanta as a start to the month of August.

Three people died from those attacks.

Emergency responders reported 53-year-old Darrell Owens dead from gunshot injuries when they arrived at 1657 Lakewood Avenue in southeast Atlanta, sometime after 2:30 a.m., Sunday.

Police found a man with a critical bullet wound around 9 a.m., at 583 Whitaker Street in the English Avenue neighborhood. He was hospitalized and later died, police said. He has not been identified, as authorities attempt to notify his next of kin.

Within an hour, reports of gunfire led investigators back to Lakewood Avenue — this time at 1420 Lakewood — where a man was killed in a dispute that police said escalated to a deadly shooting.

Four other victims fared better, suffering injuries ranging from a man stabbed in an altercation at an encampment of homeless individuals to a woman shot outside a Buckhead office building early Sunday morning.

Perhaps the least violent of the aggravated assaults perpetrated on Aug. 1, was the armed robbery of a Brinks Security Officer early Sunday morning. Atlanta Police say the bandit brandished a handgun as the security officer emerged from the safety of the armored truck delivering cash Sunday morning.

The robber made off with a bag full of cash and exchanged gunfire with the guard.

The climate of violent crime in Atlanta continues to escalate with 77 homicides recorded through July 28, roughly matching the pace of killings in the same timeframe in 2020 and far ahead of the count in 2019, According to Atlanta Police records. As of last Wednesday, there were 1,457 aggravated assaults in Atlanta, somewhat ahead of the pace of similar crimes recorded last year, and far ahead of what was seen in 2019.
