Two recent incidents, including a shakedown, at the jail revealed several contraband items, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Then, on Thursday morning, a sergeant noticed a breach in the fencing at the Rice Street Jail, authorities said.

During an investigation, authorities said they uncovered a hole in a jail window's exterior, leading to a shakedown of the particular housing zone.

The following items were seized during the shakedown, per authorities:

  • 32 packs of cigarettes
  • Five bags of loose cigarettes (99 total)
  • Eight packs of rolling paper
  • Five lighters
  • 10 baggies of suspected marijuana (about 1 pound total)
  • Three cell phone chargers
  • Four cell phones

There is no evidence the two incidents were related, authorities said.

"They do, however, underscore the vigilance of our team and our ongoing commitment to facility safety and security," authorities said in a news release.

They asked anyone with information about attempts to smuggle contraband into the Fulton County Jail to call (404) 577-8477 with anonymous tips, possibly resulting in a $5,000 reward.
