Chemical Fire At Calhoun Plant Closes School System
Calhoun city schools closed on Friday because of concerns about air quality as a result of the explosion.
CALHOUN, GA — A chemical fire shut down an entire north Georgia school system on Friday. Calhoun city schools closed after what school officials described as a "hazardous chemical fire" posed a threat to air quality in and around the schools. School officials also were advising everyone in the area to remain indoors.
The chemical fire happened at a manufacturing plant on Wall Street. Fire officials told Fox 5 there were 10 workers in the building when the explosion happened. The fire started around 1 am, according to Channel 2, at the DHM Adhesives plant. One person is reported to have been injured, and the fire has been contained.
Later in the morning, school officials announced they were resuming after school activities, including a scheduled high school football game.
