Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:

  1. Todd and Julie Chrisley, known for their reality TV show "Chrisley Knows Best," which began in Atlanta, recently received sentences for their bank fraud and tax evasion conviction earlier this year. Todd was given a 12-year prison sentence, and Julie received seven years. (Associated Press)
  2. Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the divorcee of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $9 million to Healthcare Georgia Foundation. The nonprofit cares for vulnerable populations and underserved communities in the state. It will use the funds to leverage state partnerships to create a healthier life for Georgia residents. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
  3. Atlanta is extending two more years of relief for cab drivers suffering from the effects of the pandemic. The relief allows cab drivers to operate a vehicle up to 10 years old versus the initial 7-year-old limit. Travelers are choosing other ridesharing services, such as Uber and Lyft, leaving the taxicab industry plummeting. As a result, drivers need help affording newer vehicles to stay within code requirements. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  4. Viral videos of street racers have turned the metro Atlanta area into one of the most popular destinations for illegal street racing and takeovers. State Sen. Emanuel Jones passed a law last year which would allow fines of up to $1,000 for spectators and put drivers in jail until trial. However, a new law fines as high as $5,000 and allows police to seize vehicles. Jones plans on filing a new bill with stricter penalties, including felony charges. (WSB Atlanta)
  5. A Florida family stopped in Atlanta as part of their vacation to visit the Georgia Aquarium when they discovered their van was stolen from a parking lot on Marietta Street. Joriane Horning and her husband initially received messages from their credit card companies about fraudulent charges, and they went to check the wallet – which was left in the missing car. There are no suspects in custody. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
