'Dangerous' 112-Degree Temps To Bake GA Amid Storms

Triple-digit feel-like temperatures will threaten Georgia amid storms across the state.

ATLANTA, GA — Weather officials warned dangerous heat is on the way amid storms into early next week in portions of Georgia.

The National Weather Service on Friday said scattered thunderstorms are anticipated between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday in west central Georgia.

Isolated storms can occur in other parts of the state, including metro Atlanta. The storms are not expected to be severe, and flooding is unlikely, the NWS reported.

Saturday and Sunday could be dry, but storms may return on Tuesday and could last through at least Thursday.

While the storms may not be severe, apparent temperatures will be threatening to north and central Georgia, the NWS reported.

Heat indices, or feel-like temperatures, are predicted to rise above 100 degrees through Wednesday.

The NWS reported around 100-degree heat indices may cook Georgia, from Athens to Atlanta to Macon, on Friday.

By Saturday, nearly all of the region will experience triple-digit heat index values; and by Tuesday, metro Atlanta could feel like 109 degrees while Macon could feel like 112 degrees.

"Dangerous heat will develop in Georgia by early next week. The most oppressive heat and humidity of the year thus far is expected. Precautions should be taking to protect yourself, your family and you pets from the heat," the NWS said on Friday.

The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency offered the following heat safety tips:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and replace salts and minerals in your body. Anyone on a fluid-restricted diet or who has a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake. People with epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease should also consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
  • Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
  • Closely monitor a local radio station, TV station or NOAA Weather Radio for the latest information.
  • Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Spend time in air-conditioned places. If you cannot afford an air conditioner, spend some time each day in an air-conditioned environment such as public libraries, shopping malls or other indoor public spaces.
  • Stay on the lowest floor, out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available.
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
  • Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
