Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:

  1. After a woods fire destroyed a homeless encampment site near Buckhead, the City of Atlanta is trying to provide hundreds of residents with permanent housing and support. The Elizabeth Foundation has been working with the residents long-term and helping them get jobs. The fire started in one of the tents, and although residents did not own much, everything they did possess was gone, creating another setback. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  2. The U.S. Department of the Treasury allocated $45 million to Invest Atlanta for economic development projects that generate jobs and revitalize Atlanta neighborhoods. The investment company has seen $95 million in additional economic development funding through Atlanta's New Markets Tax Credit program over two years. Recent investments include Trees Atlanta, Young Family YMCA, and Pittsburgh Yards. (Metro Atlanta CEO)
  3. McDonald's employees assaulted a woman after she asked for a refund in northwest Atlanta. She was with friends picking up a mobile order and requesting another special order, which ended in a disagreement at the window. The woman requested a refund, so the manager asked her to come inside for the transaction. After the woman parked, employees allegedly went to the car, yelled obscenities, and assaulted the woman with mace. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  4. According to police, a woman was shot by her daughter's boyfriend after a fight broke out between the mother's boyfriend and the boy. The mother's boyfriend pulled out a gun, but the boy grabbed it and fired. A bullet struck the mother, who tried shooting back at him. The mother is expected to recover; however, police have not found the boy. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  5. Police are still searching for the man who murdered a seven-year-old girl in August. Investigators found the girl at the Camden Vantage apartment complex and believe an argument escalated at a family gathering, leading a stray bullet to strike the girl. Police suspect Deshon Collin shot and killed the young girl. He is wanted for murder, among other charges, with a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
