Ex-Braves Coach Jimy Williams Dies At 80

Jimy Williams was on the coaching staff that led the Atlanta Braves to its 1995 World Series win.

ATLANTA — Jimy Williams, who previously served as a third baseman coach for the Atlanta Braves through its 1995 World Series win, has died, the team said Monday. He was 80.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jimy’s family and friends," the Braves tweeted, adding Williams was "forever a World Series champion."

The cause of death for Williams, who was a Braves coach from 1991-96, is unknown. Sports Illustrated reported he died Friday.

According to Battery Power, an outlet that covers all Braves news, Williams also had a run on few other Major League Baseball teams.

Williams managed the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros. He was also a former coach for the Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies, according to the outlet.

The Santa Maria, California native was born on Oct. 4, 1943 and had six siblings, according to his biography by the Society for American Baseball Research.

Baseball was his choice of sport at Fresno State, where he earned bachelor of arts degree in agribusiness, according to this biography. Williams moved on to play a season as shortstop in the Basin League before signing with the Red Sox.

He was later drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in November 1965 and has also played for the Cincinnati Reds and Vancouver Mounties.
