Explosion At Newnan Aluminum Plant Injures Multiple People, Rocks Surrounding Areas

It's unclear exactly what caused the blast at Bonnell Aluminum Extrusion Company.

Several people were injured Wednesday morning after an explosion at an aluminum plant in Newnan, Georgia, sent shrapnel flying and shockwaves radiating out that were felt at least a mile away.

The Newnan Police Department said, "There were a few injuries" following the blast that occurred around 9:15 a.m. "Most of the injured were taken by ground ambulance to local hospitals and were able to call family to notify them. Two people were flown by air ambulance to Atlanta," the department said in a Facebook post.

The Newnan Times-Herald, citing EMT officials on the scene, said that at least five people were injured, some with life-threatening injures. It was not immediately clear whether the injured people were workers or bystanders.

Chopper video from local television stations showed a large hole in the roof of the Bonnell Aluminum plant following the blast. The plant did not immediately return a Patch request for comment.

Shortly after the blast, social media lit up with people who either saw or felt the explosion.

Bonnell's Newnan plant is 500,000 square feet, according to the company's website. An explosion at the plant in 1956 killed two people.
