GEORGIA – There doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming rush in Georgia to get tested for COVID-19 … yet.

While nationwide, the omicron variant of the coronavirus appears to have spurred a surge in cases of COVID-19, hospital capacity in Georgia is not at the breaking point at this time, state officials said. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, hospitals are at 85 percent occupancy, and emergency room, intensive care unit, and ventilator usage have decreased and flattened out from numbers in October.

Still, the latest surge of cases fueled by the rise of omicron, coupled with the desires from people who want to be able to safely visit with friends and loved ones during the holiday season, have sparked demand across the country for COVID-19 tests.

State officials say testing is critical to helping to reduce the spread of the virus, and recommend that anyone who has COVID-19 symptoms or has come into contact with someone who has tested positive go to take a COVID-19 test.
