GA Rep's Granddaughters Survive TX Floods That Killed Nearly 90

Flooding has killed nearly 90 people in Texas, with 10 campers unaccounted for. A GA congressman's granddaughters survived the disaster.

The granddaughters of Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter are safe after disastrous flooding that reportedly left nearly 90 people dead, including 27 people from a Christian girls camp, last week in Kerr County, Texas.

The Kerr County (Texas) Sheriff's Office said 48 adults and 27 children have been found dead as of 8:30 a.m. Monday after torrential rainfall slammed Texas' Hill Country and the Guadalupe River.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management said the storms started Wednesday in the Concho Valley, Hill Country and central Texas regions.

Carter, a Republican who represents Georgia's First District, on Sunday said his granddaughters were attending summer camp in Texas and were safe, although they lost a cousin.

"They are safe, and I thank you for your well-wishes and prayers during this time. Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky. My granddaughters lost their cousin … and many other families are grieving loved ones. Please join me in prayers for Texas. We must ensure that they have the resources they need to find those still missing and save lives," Carter said in a Facebook post.

More than 500 people have been recovered, including 361 by air evacuations, since Friday, according to the Texas Military Department in a social media post.

The City of Kerrville in an update on Monday said identifications were pending on 10 adults and nine children.

The flooding was expected to continue this week as authorities spent Monday resuming their search-and-rescue operations.

Across Texas, 41 people were unaccounted for, according to the Associated Press, citing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. As of Monday afternoon, 10 Camp Mystic campers and one counselor were unaccounted for, authorities said.

The Hunt-based private Christian camp said 27 campers and counselors died in the tragic flooding.

"Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly. We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from community, first responders and officials at every level. We ask for your continued prayers, respect and privacy for each of our families affected. May the Lord continue to wrap His presence around all of us," Camp Mystic said on its website.

On Monday, U.S. Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock, D-GA, took to X to express his sadness for the devastation in Texas.

"I’m deeply saddened by the tragedy in Texas that has taken the lives of so many," Warnock tweeted. "I am keeping those who have lost loved ones in my prayers and holding the people of Texas in my heart today. Grateful for the first responders who are working around the clock to rescue survivors."

The calamity also sparked thoughts from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-GA, who on Saturday said she is praying for the people of Texas.

"As the death toll continues to rise in Texas, I’m praying for survivors to be found, for the affected families of those lost, and for all first responders heroically searching for those missing," she tweeted. "I can’t imagine the pain many parents are going through right now regarding the sweet little children swept away in flood waters at the camps."

Hundreds of people were assisting with rescue efforts, authorities said.
