Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:

  1. Gas prices are on the rise across Georgia, and it looks like it's only going to get worse. The state's long break from gas taxes ended on Wednesday. While some stations have been able to maintain their previous prices, some are going up by 40 cents per gallon. State officials have said they will use the money from the gas tax to improve roads. 2. On Wednesday, Georgia legislators approved rules that would protect them from having to testify in court. This decision comes after several Georgia politicians were called before a grand jury to testify regarding the 2020 presidential election. Additionally, the rules were altered to eliminate the Senate's Special Judiciary Committee. The rules will be in effect for the next two years. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. Two inmates have been accused of intentionally setting a Fulton County Jail dorm on fire. The small fire happened on Thursday in one dorm, leading to the inmates being evacuated. After the fire was dealt with, the inmates were able to return to the dorms. The two inmates responsible were taken to the hospital for observation. (Atlanta Patch)
  4. The Atlanta Public School system has added weapons detection systems to all their middle school and high school locations. The detection systems are the same that arenas like the Mercedes-Benz Stadium uses. This decision was made after several Atlanta school shootings. School security and fighting youth gun violence are going to be legislative priorities for the Atlanta government in 2023. (WABE 90.1 FM)
