Georgia Publix Stores End Free Generic Prescription Program

GEORGIA — Publix has officially nixed its free generic prescription program in Georgia after more than a decade.

Since its launch in 2007, the Florida-based grocery chain has filled more than 100 million free prescriptions. The popular prescription drug program, however, permanently ended Wednesday.

"We consistently evaluate our programs and services to ensure they are meeting the intended purpose and evolve over time. Medications offered through our program are typically covered through insurance plans," the company said in a statement on its website.

According to Publix, maintenance medications, including Metformin, Lisinopril and Amlodipine will be eligible for $7.50 for a 90-day supply and Amoxicillin will be $7.50 for a 14-day supply. Quantity limits still apply.

Founded in 1930 in Winter Haven, FL, Publix is the largest employee-owned company in the United States with 1,297 store locations, including 196 in Georgia.
