Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:
- Google recently donated $5 million to Spelman College to recognize women of color working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The grant will create a data dashboard highlighting Black, Latina, and Indigenous women's work in STEM. (WABE 90.1 FM)
- Five Georgia restaurants, including four in Atlanta, made Yelp's Top 100 U.S. Restaurants list for 2022. Fia Restaurant, Whiskey Bird, and Red Phone Booth made it in the top 50, while Brunch House came in at 51. Yelp based the rankings on total submissions, ratings, reviews, and geographic representation. (WSB Atlanta)
- The state has now launched an investigation after a woman said last month Greenwood Cemetery moved her husband’s headstone, and she’s unsure of the location of his body. The state’s cemetery division spoke with the family, who was told the headstone needed to be moved as the family continued to visit the old space for two years where the burial initially took place. Officials say they have enough information to continue with the investigation and find the location of the body. (WSB Atlanta)
- The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has implemented a few changes to help with the holiday crowds this season, including renovations, road construction, and shifting traffic lanes. Officials suggest you arrive at the airport three hours before your departure and double-check that you don't have any prohibited items in your carry-on to make the process smooth. (WSB Radio)
- The City of Atlanta's Lift 1.0 initiative began in 2020 and sought to house 807 people and families in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the millions of dollars funded housing in some of the worst apartment complexes in DeKalb. The second phase of the LIFT program aims to house more than 1,500 people/families by 2024 with nearly $27 million in city, state, and federal funding.
