Ground Stop At Atlanta Airport Due To Storms

Storms forced inbound flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to be delayed Thursday.

ATLANTA, GA — The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop Thursday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

All flights inbound to Hartsfield were held at their origin until 3:30 p.m., according to FlightAware, which monitors flight data. The ground stop was initially set to end at 2:45 p.m. but was extended.

Around 3:40 p.m., the FAA reported the following delays:

  • Due to weather/low ceilings, departure traffic destined to General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport, Boston, MA (BOS) is currently experiencing delays averaging 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • Due to weather/low ceilings, departure traffic destined to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington, DC (DCA) is currently experiencing delays averaging 23 minutes.
  • Due to weather/thunderstorms, departure traffic destined to Newark International Airport, Newark, NJ (EWR) is currently experiencing delays averaging 50 minutes.
  • Due to weather/thunderstorms, departure traffic destined to John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK) is currently experiencing delays averaging 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Scattered thunderstorms were expected through Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service's Peachtree City office.

There was a chance for severe storms in eastern Georgia, where damaging winds were the primary hazard. The NWS said any severe risk at its highest could come between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

In metro Atlanta and surrounding areas, the NWS predicted frequent lightning, locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds on Thursday. Few storms could become strong to severe, with the NWS adding localized flash flooding could be an issue alongside damaging wind gusts.

Storms are expected daily through at least Wednesday, according to the NWS forecast.
