Ground Stop Lifted At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport

Departures at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport were grounded early Friday evening, but were later lifted, the FAA's website said.

ATLANTA, GA — A ground stop issued at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday afternoon due to a possible fire or gas smell in the control tower was lifted with no hazards found, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Departures at the airport were grounded shortly before 5:10 p.m., an alert on the FAA's website said.

While one FAA alert said a fire prompted the ground stop, officials said in a separate alert that the air traffic control tower was evacuated due to a strong gas smell.

FOX Atlanta reported the ground stop was lifted about 7 p.m., after nearly 500 flights were delayed.

As of 7:10 p.m., flight tracking website FlightAware was reporting flight delays at the airport were about 39 minutes and decreasing.
