HBO Actor Shares Updates After Son Survives EF-2 Tornado In Metro Atlanta
NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal sent words of support to the son of "The Wire" actor after the student was thrown 300 feet by a tornado.
LOCUST GROVE, GA — The son of HBO actor Tray Chaney is out of the intensive care unit, but remains hospitalized after an EF-2 tornado threw him 300 feet from his home last week.
Tray Chaney, who performed as "Poot" on HBO's "The Wire," was home with son Malachi Chaney when the massive tornado tore through Henry County on Thursday. The father-son duo were both injured, though the elder Chaney was released the same day from the hospital.
The actor has regularly shared updates on Facebook and Instagram. He and his son survived the twister, but his home was destroyed.

Malachi Chaney, a Savannah State University student, celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday while in the hospital. He continues to be surrounded by family, Tray Chaney wrote Wednesday on Facebook.
"You Got Your Village Behind You Warrior, Young God. Did 5 Days in ICU. NOW WE OUTTA ICU. Still gotta remain in the hospital for a whole other process (who knows how long) BUT You talking Progress….LIKE YOUR MY HERO! This BOUNCE BACK PERSONAL," Tray Chaney wrote.

Though he said his family lost everything when the tornado hit, WSB-TV reported a McDonough woman found Malachi Chaney's Luella High School diploma 10 miles from his Locust Grove home. The woman told WSB-TV the diploma was found lying in front of her flower bed.

On Tuesday, Tray Chaney said he has received calls and text messages but is not able to talk. He has expressed his faith through a series of social media posts.
"Can’t just praise GOD when it’s all good. Sometimes HELL will show up at ya front door punch you in the mouth & take the roof off the crib in real time …..you still gotta FIGHT…then say THANK YOU GOD. CHANEY SURVIVORS FATHER SON," he wrote Monday.
That same day, he revealed getting support from superstar NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal.
In a video post, O'Neal sent words of encouragement to Malachi Chaney and vowed to visit him once he is released from the hospital.
"I'm sorry this happened to you, but you're strong," O'Neal said in the video. "You come from a strong family, strong roots. You're going to be alright."
The National Weather Service previously told Patch the tornado was going 135 mph when it ripped through Henry County mid-afternoon. The twister spanned 1.82 miles and had a width of 200 yards. It originated northeast of Luella before heading south-southeast of Blacksville in Henry, the NWS said.
A GoFundMe was established to help the Chaney family rebuild and purchase essentials. As of Wednesday morning, it collected more than $98,000 of its $100,000 goal.
