Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- One woman could potentially face up to 20 years in prison for defrauding the Georgia Department of Labor out of $30 million in stolen benefits. Edith Nate Hicks from Atlanta is one of seven Georgians allegedly part of the scheme, which included filing over 5,000 fake unemployment insurance claims. According to officials, Hicks is the only one to plead guilty to stealing information from patients as a hospital healthcare employee. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- An Atlanta man who disappeared on Sunday was found dead just days later. The 33-year-old father and husband, Nicholas Bachhuber, was supposedly having a difficult time with personal stress while dealing with the loss of a family member, however, the cause of death is still unknown. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- Georgia is the No. 1 state in the nation for new HIV infections, with Atlanta having one of the highest infection rates in the world. According to the 2022 UNAIDS World AIDS Day report, inequalities are stopping an end to the epidemic in southern states. (GPB News)
- Audreona Scott was 22 weeks pregnant when her water broke, and she went into labor. The survival rate at 22 weeks gestation is only 28 percent. However, hospital staff pulled together the right equipment, and for the first time, a premature baby this young survived at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. - Two separate accidents at I-75 North and Cleveland Avenue sent two to the hospital, including an Atlanta Police Department motorcycle officer. The officer was thrown from his motorcycle and the injuries are unclear. However, according to authorities, he was alert, conscious, and breathing after the impact. (11 Alive)
