SAVANNAH, GA -- One of the nation's most popular St. Patrick's Day celebration spots was trashed during Saturday's celebration, sparking outrage on social media. Wright Square in Savannah was left strewn with trash and debris, according to a City of Savannah Facebook posting, which added that staff and local volunteers undertook a massive cleanup in a spirit of civic responsibility.
The city's social media posting has been shared more than 1,100 times, with commenters mostly expressing outrage over revelers' behavior.
Readers called the spectacle "criminal," disgraceful," and "outrageous."

Savannah's annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations began Friday along River Street and in City Market, both in downtown. The St. Patrick's Day parade ran from 10:15 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Savannah annually attracts more than 300,000 people during the celebration.
