Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:
- A ban on abortions after the six-week mark, or when doctors detect a heartbeat, that had been in effect since July was overturned by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney yesterday. A lawsuit filed by opponents of the law argued it was unconstitutional as the law violates the right to privacy. McBurney agreed with the case, and the ban now applies statewide. (Associated Press)
- An Atlanta law firm is donating 2,000 turkeys and $20,000 worth of groceries to families in need for Thanksgiving. Witherite Law Group hosts an annual giveaway, but this year will be incomparable in the metro Atlanta area. The company is partnering with V-103 The People’s Station, 1-800-TruckWreck, and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to host the giveaway. (The Atlanta Voice)
- A California company hopes to build a $118 million plant in Atlanta to house its electric aircraft. Archer Aviation is attempting to create air taxis that take off and land vertically, have six propellers, and seat four passengers and a pilot. The investment could also bring 1,000 jobs to the area by 2025. (WSB Atlanta)
- A 16-year-old is now in custody after a fatal shooting in a Chick-fil-A parking lot. Police charged the teenager with involuntary manslaughter; however, this incident is separate from another recent shooting of a 21-year-old man at this location. Local businesses are searching for ways to increase police patrol and lower crime in the area. (WSB Atlanta)
- Michael Harris II, Atlanta Braves outfielder, was named the 2022 National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year. The 21-year-old won against his teammate Spencer Strider. Nine Braves players have received the award over the years, with the most recent awardee in 2018. (Atlanta Patch)
