Former Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall Announces Run For Lieutenant Governor

Former Atlanta City Councilmember and U.S. Congressman Kwanza Hall announced that he will run for lieutenant governor.

ATLANTA, GA — Former Atlanta City Councilmember and short-time U.S. Congressman Kwanza Hall on Monday launched his bid to be Georgia’s next lieutenant governor.

I plan to be the first Lieutenant Governor of named Kwanza,” Hall said in an interview with KISS 104.1 FM radio personalities Frank Ski and Nina Brown.

Hall most recently was selected to represent Georgia’s 5th Congressional District in 2020 after Congressman John Lewis died in 2020. He would later lose the seat to Nikema Williams in a special election.

Hall served for 12 years as Councilmember representing Atlanta’s District 2 and he ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2017. He also served as the vice-chair to the audit committee for the Atlanta Board of Education.

In the Democratic primary in May, Hall will face former state Attorney General candidate Charlie Bailey and State Rep. Renita Shannon. With sitting Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan stepping down at the end of this term, the Republican party will see Sens. Butch Miller and Burt Jones compete for the nomination.

Hall said he wants to put aside culture wars and pay more attention to the needs of the people of the state.

“Georgia needs leadership that is focused on serving Georgians,” he said. “It's time for Georgia’s elected officials to put Georgians first. As Lieutenant Governor, I will put people first.”
