Labor Day Storms May Drench GA Travel Plans, See Latest Forecast

Thinking about barbecuing and celebrating Labor Day outdoors? Here's what you need to know about storm chances in Georgia.

If you are planning to observe Labor Day outdoors this weekend, you may want to create a plan B as storms could threaten your activities.

Both the National Weather Service and AccuWeather reported storms could sprout this weekend for the Southeast, including in Georgia.

The NWS predicted the strongest chance for a storm system will be Saturday in Georgia; however, AccuWeather says the downpour could begin as soon as Friday in the Southeast.

The north and central regions of Georgia may face daily rains through at least Thursday, the NWS reported.

Travelers are reminded that rain may drench their plans and cause delays in the Southeast.

"From Friday to Sunday, much of the Southeast coast will experience a persistent pattern of drenching showers and heavy thunderstorms as an area of low pressure drifts eastward from the Gulf toward Florida,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said in a news release. ... "Rain in this southeastern zone may be intense enough to cause urban and low-lying area flooding,” Anderson said.

The system may show tropical traits by early next week and transform into a tropical storm, AccuWeather forecast.

With the system may come lightning and waterspouts, possibly wreaking havoc on Georgia beaches. AccuWeather reported northeasterly winds could breeze along the Southeast coast from Sunday into Monday.

“Beachgoers should expect rough surf and strong rip currents from Florida to the Carolinas, expanding north to Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey,” Anderson said in the release. “Minor flooding is also possible at times of high tide in areas prone to coastal flooding.”

AccuWeather predicted fair to good travel conditions Friday and Monday in Georgia.
