Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- A 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death of Fulton County Deputy James Thomas, 24, who was found deceased in a crashed vehicle on Dec. 29. According to Atlanta police, the shooting resulted from an argument after the car accident. The suspect, Alton Oliver,was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and more. (Atlanta Patch)
- New Year's Eve celebratory gunfire shot at least three people over the weekend. Thousands of people took to the streets of downtown Atlanta to celebrate the new year. Officers found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound and two others injured within a quarter-mile radius. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- An Atlanta woman lost her home to a fire a few days after Thanksgiving while also battling leukemia, but support from the community has helped her immensely. Danielle Moye lost everything in the house fire, including her parents' ashes; however, since her story went public a week ago, the community created a fundraiser to raise over $13,000. (WSB Radio)
- According to Atlanta fire officials, an older woman and her cat were found dead after a fire broke out at her Lakemoore Drive apartment. The fire department could not get inside promptly due to burglar bars on the doors, which had to be forced open to enter. The cause of the fire is under investigation. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- Atlanta police arrested and charged 23-year-old Antonio Brown for the murder of 77-year-old Eleanor Bowles last month. Brown had his first court appearance in December but is asking the judge to grant him a bond. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
