Man Dies In Atlanta Apartment Fire: Police

Breaking: Sixty-four-year-old man succumbs in early Wednesday blaze in Venetian Hills Apartments in southwest Atlanta.

The fire victim was a 64-year-old man, according to news reports.

The Red Cross rendered assistance to 31 people in 11 families displaced by the blaze.

"Our volunteers are meeting one-on-one with those affected to help meet emergency needs for essentials such as shelter, food, clothing and replacement prescriptions," Red Cross spokeswoman Divina Mims Puckett told Patch. "Red Cross caseworkers will continue to work with residents this week to help them get back on their feet."

The blaze was reported around 4 a.m. at Venetian Hills Apartments on Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta.

“Units got on scene and discovered a pretty hectic situation,” fire Sgt. Cortez Stafford told news cameras. “We had people outside. We had people evacuating the building.”

About 20 apartment units were affected in the blaze, Puckett said.

MARTA buses were mobilized to help get those displaced out of the cold, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
