Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:

  1. A Frontier flight from Cincinnati to Tampa diverted to landing in Atlanta over the weekend because a passenger threatened to use a weapon he had on board. Two veterans were told the information by a woman sitting next to the suspect, who threatened to cut multiple people on the flight with a box cutter. The woman notified the flight crew, and one of the veterans switched seats with her to subdue the suspect if the situation escalated. Police arrested the suspect after landing. (Atlanta Patch)
  2. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 states, including Georgia, report high influenza cases. The Georgia Department of Public Health said the flu is spreading earlier than in recent years. Officials are urging people to get the flu vaccine as colder temperatures approach. (WSB Atlanta)
  3. According to police, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot near a Chick-fil-A in southwest Atlanta. Police said the victim went to the fast-food restaurant with the suspect and got back into the car with the suspect and three passengers. The suspect shot the man in the car and ran on foot; the passengers and other witnesses are helping the police with the investigation. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  4. An Atlanta family has donated their kidneys to strangers over the last year. The process is called a living non-directed organ donation, which is extremely rare even with the significant backlog of people waiting for a new kidney. Amy Parker Zupancic and her sons Caleb and Daniel McCracken agree it has been the best thing they have ever done. (Reporter Newspapers + Atlanta Intown)
  5. Metro Atlanta police are searching for a burglar who broke into a Sandy Springs home and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and handbags. However, the suspect returned to the home a few days later to return the items in a trash bag in the victim's mailbox. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
