Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:
- Republican Gov. Brian Kemp is projected to win against Stacey Abrams for the second time, securing his seat in office for four more years. Incumbent Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is also projected to win his re-election bid. Attorney General Chris Carr, Insurance Commissioner John King, and State School Superintendent Richard Woods also led their respective races. As a reminder, all results are unofficial until they are certified. (Atlanta Patch)
- Two siblings died after unknown suspect(s) fired 32 bullets at their mother's metro Atlanta home. The woman woke up to gunshots and found her two adult children, Darrell and Denee Wheelous, unresponsive in the DeKalb County home. This is not the first incident where suspects fired gunshots at random homes. Last month, one woman was shot by a stray bullet while sleeping, and a drive-by shooting injured four people. - According to the University System of Georgia (USG), public universities in the state are seeing a decrease in enrollment for the second consecutive year. Four-year public institutions fell 1.6 percent in enrollment across the state. USG attributes the decline to a few factors, including the ongoing effects of the pandemic, financial unpredictability, and a strong job market. (WSB Atlanta)
- The parks and land preservation organization awarded Ralph Edwards, instrumental in the Atlanta Beltline revitalization effort, the 2022 Conservation Trailblazer. Edwards is a part of the Georgia Chapter of the Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit devoted to preserving land and creating parks across the country. (MDJOnline.com)
- A 16-year-old boy was shot near Georgia State University (GSU). According to GSU officials, an individual was breaking into cars, and a victim fired shots at the suspect; however, it is unclear if the 16-year-old boy was breaking into vehicles or was a bystander. Investigators are still putting the pieces of the story together as of Wednesday evening. (WSB Atlanta)
