ATLANTA, GA — Imagine having your groceries flown onto your doorstep. Well, Walmart's latest expansion could afford you this experience.

Walmart recently announced its intention to bring its drone delivery service to Atlanta and four other southern cities. It was not immediately known when the popular store plans to start its service.

It will come during a partnership with Wing, a company providing the drones flying within 6 miles of a store location, Walmart said in a news release. The service is already being offered in Dallas, Texas and Bentonville, Arkansas.

The retail giant's drone delivery initiative first took off in 2021 and will now dive into Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina, Houston, Texas; and Orlando and Tampa, both in Florida. Walmart claimed its drone delivery program is a first of its kind in these states.

Ultimately, the goal is to launch the delivery system at 100 stores, Walmart said, promising delivery of 30 minutes or less.

“As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail. We’re pushing the boundaries of convenience to better serve our customers, making shopping faster and easier than ever before,” said Greg Cathey, senior vice president of Walmart U.S. Transformation and Innovation, in a news release.

“This expansion of our drone delivery service marks a significant milestone in that journey. As the first retailer to scale drone delivery, Walmart is once again demonstrating its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance our delivery offerings with a focus on speed.”

To receive items by drone, customers will first order through the Wing app before choosing a delivery location. Deliveries can be tracked.

Health and wellness products and household essentials are some of the items that Walmart intends to deliver by drone, the company said. Walmart customers are additionally using the drone service to receive medication, baby formula and COVID-19 tests.

Most frequently, Walmart said people are purchasing fresh fruit, eggs, ice cream and pet food by drones.
