More Severe Weather Expected In GA After 1 Killed In Weekend Storms

After a weekend storm led to a man's death and caused thousands to lose power, GA faces more severe storms on Monday with a tornado risk.

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia could be hit by more severe storms capable of generating tornadoes and 60 mph winds Monday after a man was killed by a falling tree during a weekend storm that left at least 200,000 people without power.

A storm that hit Georgia on Saturday, taking out electricity across metro Atlanta, killed 56-year-old Jason Payne of Carnesville, the Georgia State Patrol told Patch.

Payne was in a 2000 Nissan Altima, driving east on GA-51 around 6:45 p.m. in Banks County when a tree fell on top of the car and killed Payne, authorities said.

As of early Monday, 95 percent of around 200,000 Georgia Power customers had electricity restored, Georgia Power spokesperson Alicia Brown told WAGA-TV.

Georgia Power on Sunday stated "all hands on deck" were responding to the storm's aftermath, not only restoring power but also repairing damage left in the wake of heavy rain and high winds.

More Severe Storms

Georgians should brace for more treacherous storms on Monday, when north and central Georgia were under a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe weather. The National Weather Service stated the peak threat could arrive between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m.

A brief spin-up tornado, damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail cannot be ruled out with the storms.
