Shelter In Place Lifted At Spelman, Clark Atlanta After Threats Against HBCUs

Spelman College faculty, staff and students were ordered to shelter in place and avoid the Clark Atlanta University campus due to a threat.

ATLANTA, GA — A shelter-in-place order at Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University have been lifted after several historically Black colleges and universities were threatened Thursday across the U.S., according to media reports.

The order was issued after CAU received a threat of an unknown nature, the college said.

CAU staff said a "situation on campus" was being addressed, WANF reported.

Both Spelman and CAU are part of the Atlanta University Center Consortium in the 600 block of Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard. The college did not detail the nature of the threat against CAU.

"Out of precaution and due to our close proximity, we are asking Spelman faculty, staff and students to shelter in place and avoid the CAU campus until further notice," Spelman staff said in an earlier tweet.

Spelman has not received any threats as of early Thursday afternoon, the college said. Be that as it may, Spelman said it increased security measures across campus and at its two main entrances.

"Your safety remains our top priority," Spelman tweeted, later announcing that the campus was no longer ordered to shelter in place around 2 p.m.

Aside from Spelman and CAU, the Atlanta University Center Consortium also includes Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine.

HBCUs in Virginia and Florida have reported receiving threats.
